Realized I was brushing the flue wrong for 8 years, here's how I figured it out

So I've been doing residential sweeps for about 8 years now, and I always thought I had the brush direction down. I'd go top down, spin it slow, pull up fast, the whole routine. Then last Tuesday I was on a job in Everett and the homeowner, this retired mason, watches me for a minute and goes 'you know you're pushing the soot back into the liner, right?' I felt like an idiot. He showed me that I needed to reverse the spiral pattern on the rod so the bristles actually lift the creosote out instead of packing it down. I checked my brush after and the wear pattern was totally backwards. Has anyone else had a moment where a customer or another sweep pointed out something basic you'd been messing up for years? I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who missed something this obvious.
