Tried running my rods dry last Tuesday and wound up pulling a nest out in pieces
Everyone on here keeps saying never run your rods without lube, and I finally went against that last Tuesday on a brick flue in a 1920s house near downtown. It was a simple sweep, maybe 25 feet, so I figured dry rods would grip the creosote better and save me a trip back to the truck for the bottle. Halfway down, the brush snagged hard and when I pulled, a starling nest came up in about six chunks, each one raining soot all over the hearth and my boots. Took me 40 extra minutes to vacuum the mess and I still had to relube and run the flue again from the top. Ended up charging the same flat rate, so that was basically free labor on my part. Any of you run dry on purpose for heavy nests, or is that just asking for it?
