My uncle promised me the 50 percent deposit would keep clients from vanishing, and he was dead wrong
My uncle has run a small remodel business in Ohio for almost 30 years, and when I started freelancing he sat me down and swore the magic fix was simple. Always take 50 percent up front, he said, because nobody walks away from money they already paid. Sounded smart, so I started asking for half before any work began. My third client, a guy named Dennis who wanted a full website for his bait shop, paid the $1,200 deposit without blinking. Then he went silent for 6 weeks, missed two calls, and finally texted that he had "gone in a different direction." He never asked for the money back and honestly I do not think he cared about it at all. So now I am stuck wondering if the deposit scared off the honest clients and did nothing to the flaky ones. Has anyone found a deposit rule that actually predicts who will stick around?
