My friend who owns a lawn care biz told me to fire my worst customer, and I finally did
So my buddy Dave runs a lawn care company over in Mesa and we grab tacos every couple months. Last time we talked, he asked how my design work was going and I mentioned this one guy who always pays late, like 45 to 60 days, and always has a million tiny revisions. Dave just looked at me and said, why are you still working for him? I said well it's $2,500 a month and I've had him for almost two years. He goes, dude, you're basically paying him to stress you out. That hit me hard. I ran the numbers and with all the extra back and forth I was making like $18 an hour on that account, less than my minimum for new jobs. So I sent the guy an email saying I was booked solid and couldn't take on more work after March. He didn't even fight it. Three weeks later I filled that slot with two smaller projects that pay on time and don't nitpick every pixel. My head feels lighter. Has anyone else cut a long time customer and felt weirdly guilty about it at first?
