Found a stat that 1 in 3 freelancers never see a dime of their final invoice
I was digging through some invoicing software blog last week (I want to say it was Bonsai's small business report from 2022) and one number jumped out at me. Something like 34 percent of freelance invoices go past 90 days without getting paid, and a big chunk of those just never get paid at all. I always thought late payers were rare or that I was just unlucky, but it turns out almost everyone deals with this. What weirded me out is that most people never sue over it, because by the time you're 90 days out the amount is usually too small for a lawyer but too big to just eat. I've got a $1,850 web copy job from a Denver guy that's sitting at 14 months right now, and after reading that report I finally stopped feeling dumb about it. The thing that got me was they also said clients who pay late once almost always pay late again, which matches my experience perfectly. Does anyone here actually have a rule for when you stop chasing and just write it off? Like a dollar amount or a number of months where you call it dead?
How many months do you let something ride before you stop checking your inbox for it? I've got a similar rule where anything past 6 months I just mark as dead and move on, but I'm always wondering if that's cutting it too early.
