Update: a guy at a job in Austin said my quotes were too cheap and now I charge 3x
So about 8 months ago I was doing a fence install for a guy in Austin and he flat out said 'you're way too cheap, that scares me.' I had been quoting like $18 a linear foot for cedar and wondering why I kept getting homeowners who haggled every single line item. He told me low prices attract people who want to pay even less, not people who want good work. I sat on that for a week then raised my base to $45 a foot and added a 30% deposit up front. First month I lost two jobs and panicked, but by month three I had 6 booked out and zero late payments. The folks paying real money don't nickle and dime you over a $200 change order. Has anyone else been told something like this by a customer and actually changed their pricing?
