Update: client's "quick" 2 week logo project turned into 4 months of revisions
I took on a branding job for a small coffee shop in Denver back in March. The owner said he needed a simple logo and menu design, easy stuff, maybe 2 weeks max. Fast forward 4 months and I'm still getting emails about the shade of brown on the cup sleeve. Every time I sent a version he'd say "almost there, just one more tweak" and then send a 3 page doc of notes from his "focus group" which was just his cousin and the barista. I ended up doing 23 rounds of revisions. Twenty three. For a logo that's basically a circle with a bean in it. I finally had to put my foot down and say the next round costs $75 an hour. Magically he approved it the next day. Has anyone else had a client use the word "quick" as a trap? How do you spot these people before you're 4 months deep?
Defend the client a little here, because a coffee shop owner is spending his own money and a bad logo can sit on his storefront for years, so being picky is kind of his right. You agreed to every round, you kept sending new versions, and you never set a limit until month four, so he had no way to know you were unhappy. Charge more and cap the revisions up front, or do a flat fee plus hourly after round three, that's on us as the pros, not on him.
