Am I the only one who switched from CAM software back to hand programming on the lathe?
Six months ago I was all in on letting the software post out everything, even simple 2 line chamfers. Then I stood at the machine watching a posted program rapids into a shoulder at 900 ipm on a 2 inch bar and I nearly ate my lunch. The software had the clearance wrong and I never would have caught it if I wasn't watching the distance to go screen like a hawk. After that I started hand writing all my own turning programs for anything under 20 tools, and my cycle times dropped about 12 percent because I stopped using default feeds and speeds. Now I do a quick sketch on the bench, punch in the numbers, and I know exactly where the tool is at all times. Anybody else go back to G code on the lathe after years of letting the computer do it?
Yeah I did the same thing after a posted program fed a drill straight into a chuck jaw. Now I hand write everything under 15 tools and my feeds are way better because I actually know the material. The software guys hate hearing it but once you go back you don't miss it.
