Spent 6 hours chasing a taper that was off 0.003 because of one dumb thing
Had a 4140 shaft job last Tuesday, needed a 2 degree taper to hold 0.0005 over 6 inches. Kept getting 0.003 drift on the indicator, so I tore down the setup, re-indicated the tailstock, swapped centers, checked my program twice. Turned out the compound slide gib was loose enough to shift under load and it only showed up on the finish pass. Tightened the gib, reran it, hit 0.0004 on the first try. Anyone else get burned by a loose gib on taper work or is it just me?
Tightened the gib after chasing everything else, that's the classic. Did you catch it with a dial on the compound while running the finish pass, or just find it by feel once you had it apart?
