I thought copy pasting code from tutorials was cheating until I built a working tip calculator in one evening
For 2 months I retyped every line by hand because I felt like pasting was fake learning. Then last Tuesday I pasted a chunk of code from a free site into my little tip calculator project, changed the numbers around, and watched it actually run for the first time. Turns out I learned way more from breaking and fixing someone else's code than from typing it perfectly. Anyone else start out scared of copy pasting, or was that just me?
Reminds me of when my uncle taught me to change a tire. He did the first two lug nuts, handed me the wrench, and said "now you do the rest, just don't cross thread them." I learned more from finishing what he started than I ever did watching a video about it. Same goes for code, you need to get your hands on something that already works and mess with it.
