My friend who's been coding 10 years told me to stop watching tutorials and I'm kinda mad he was right
I've been working through Python tutorials on and off since February and I had maybe 40 hours of video in by now. My buddy Dave came over to help me hang a gate on Saturday and saw my laptop open on the kitchen table, and he asked what I was building. I said nothing yet, just learning the basics. He said "you've been learning the basics for four months, build one dumb little thing and break it." So Sunday I made a terrible script that just renames all my invoice PDFs and it took me 5 hours and I had to look up the same file path question like six times but it works. How long did you guys wait before you wrote your first real thing?
Same thing happens with learning guitar. Everyone watches fretboard theory videos for months then wonders why they still can't play a song. Building the dumb thing is the whole point, even if it's ugly and takes way too long.
