Rant: I stopped using a scale after a guy at the Roaster's Guild meetup in Minneapolis poured me a cup by feel
I used to weigh every single dose to a tenth of a gram, and I would get mad if my pour over was off by half a gram. Then last October I went to a small cupping event in Minneapolis and a guy who has been roasting for 14 years made me a V60 on a whim, no scale, just eyeballed beans from a scoop and poured water straight from the kettle. That cup was better than anything I had made in six months of weighing everything. I went home and tried it myself, and yeah, my first few attempts were garbage and I dumped a lot of coffee down the sink. But after a few weeks I could tell by the smell and the way the water hit the grounds when it was close enough. Now I still own a scale, I just do not treat it like a law. I think this hobby made a lot of us paranoid about numbers when taste is the thing we actually care about. Has anyone else here ditched the scale after a nudge from someone with real time behind the bar?
