Showerthought: my $12 blade grinder beat my $90 burr grinder for cold brew, and I feel weird about it
I make cold brew in a 2 quart pitcher every Sunday, and after 6 months of fiddling I noticed the cheap blade grinder gives me a more even soak because the coarse chunks don't clog my nut milk bag like the fine burr grind does. The burr grind is clearly better for my pour over, so now I keep both on the counter like a crazy person. Anyone else using a blade grinder on purpose for anything besides drip?
Listened to a podcast where a roaster said blade grinders get a bad rap because people use them wrong, and the trick is pulsing in short bursts instead of holding the button down. He said that gives you fewer fines and a more even coarse grind, which sounds a lot like what you stumbled onto. I remember some barista on a forum saying the same thing, that fines are the real enemy in cold brew because they turn the whole batch muddy and bitter. Your setup actually makes sense, keep the burr for the stuff where you want that even fine grind and let the cheap one handle the coarse jobs. Kind of want to dig my old blade grinder out of the drawer now and give it a shot on my next batch.
