A guy at Micro Center in Denver showed me thermal paste pumps out after exactly 4 years and I never checked mine
I was picking up a power supply at Micro Center in Denver and got talking to a tech there about a laptop I'd just repaired. He pulled up a spreadsheet on his phone, 26 machines he tracked, and said the paste on every single one was dried out or pumped away at the 4 year mark. I went home and checked a desktop I built in 2021, and sure enough the middle of the CPU was bare metal. The temps dropped 14C after I redid it with a fresh pea sized dot. I always figured paste was a once and done thing unless something was clearly wrong. Now I'm wondering how many machines I've sent back out the door that were quietly cooking themselves. What's your cutoff, do you repaste on a schedule or only when the numbers look bad?
