Update: I quit doing free written quotes after a guy in Akron handed me back a 6-page bid and asked for my 'best number'
For years I figured free written quotes were just the cost of doing business, so I'd spend an hour or two on each one. Then last month a homeowner in Akron had me out to look at a basement finish, and I handed over a 6-page breakdown with line items down to the outlet covers. He flipped through it, set it on the counter, and asked for my best number like we were at a flea market. Come to find out his neighbor had already gotten a quote from me 4 months earlier for a different job and never hired anybody. I do a 15 minute walkthrough and a one page ballpark now, full scope only after a deposit. If you want the itemized version, you pay for the thinking. Curious how many of you hand out full bids for free and whether it has actually won you work.
