Heard a rigger on the radio say "we don't need the load chart, I know this one" and that line has been stuck in my head for a week
Last Tuesday I was on a 60 ton Grove helping set HVAC units on a roof in Bakersfield and I heard a guy on the channel say those exact words to his oiler, and it hit different because I did almost the same thing about 6 months ago on a smaller job. We were picking a 4,200 lb genset off a flatbed, nothing crazy, and I had done that same lift like 20 times so I skipped walking the chart and just ran it off feel. The pick went fine, but afterward I started thinking about how one bad day, one wind gust, or one guy bumping a mat could turn a "I know this one" into a real problem. The thing is I get why people do it, because when you're running the same picks day after day your gut gets pretty good and the chart starts feeling like homework. But I keep coming back to the idea that the chart isn't there for the lift you've done 20 times, it's there for the 21st time when something is off and you don't even notice yet. Curious if anyone else has caught themselves running off memory and had a close call, or if most of you still pull the chart every single pick no matter how routine.
