Saw a 300 ton crawler set up 20 feet from a live rail line in Kansas City
I was driving past a bridge job near the river in Kansas City last month and stopped to watch a crew walking a 300 ton crawler right along an active rail line. What got me was how they had flaggers and a spotter on each corner, plus the load chart taped inside the cab door where anyone could see it. Is that a normal setup for rail work, or does it depend on the railroad's own rules?
Ha, that looks like a textbook setup but honestly a lot of that is just the crew covering their own butts, not some special rail rule. Railroads each have their own safety rules and half the time the flaggers and load chart are more about the contractor's insurance than anything the railroad actually demands.
