TIL a bad ground reading on a 60 ton rig will eat 4 hours if you skip one step
Last Tuesday I was setting up a 60 ton truck crane at a job site near the river and my outrigger monitor kept flashing a fault code before I could even boom up. I messed with the outrigger pads and checked the sensors for almost 90 minutes before my oiler pointed at the chassis ground strap. Turned out the strap had a hairline crack and the whole fault was just a bad ground path causing false readings. Cleaned the contact, swapped the strap for a spare in 10 minutes, and the monitor went green right away. 4 hours gone because I started chasing the fancy electronics instead of the simple stuff first. Now I keep a spare ground strap in the toolbox and check it before anything else when a fault pops. Anybody else got a gremlin like this that turned out to be something stupid simple?
The amount of times I've pulled half a dashboard apart looking for a short and it was just a crusty ground bolt is embarrassing. Last winter my heater blower quit on a 40 ton and I spent two hours testing fuses and relays in the cold, then found the ground screw behind the kick panel had a nice little rust ring under it. Scraped it clean, snugged it down, and the fan spun like nothing ever happened. Now my first move on any electrical weirdness is to find the ground and wiggle it, which makes me look like a caveman to the younger guys until it works. Your oiler earned his pay that day.
