Used to write prompts as full scenes, now I just do one weird object and a time limit
Back in 2021 I'd spend 40 minutes building out a whole world for a prompt, characters, weather, the works, and honestly my group would just stare at it. Now I hand out a single object like a dented thermos and give everyone 7 minutes, and the stuff people come up with is way better. Which way do you all lean, heavy setup or bare bones?
Man, I heard a podcast about this, some writing teacher said limits on time force your brain to skip the boring setup and go straight to the good stuff. That lines up with what you're seeing. Seven minutes with a dented thermos means nobody has time to overthink it, and the weird object does the work for you. I've leaned bare bones ever since I tried it once and got better results in one round than a whole night of heavy setup.
