The bank teller in Boise who noticed my $300 credit card payment before I did
Two years ago I was at a credit union branch in Boise dropping off a $300 payment to chip away at a card balance I had been ignoring for months. The teller looked at the slip, then looked at me and asked if I wanted her to set up a repeating payment so I did not have to keep making the trip. I said sure, not thinking much of it, and she set it for $75 every two weeks instead of one big monthly chunk. That small change got me from a $4,200 balance down to zero in about 14 months, and I still think about how she explained it like it was no big deal. Has anyone else found that splitting payments up twice a month works better for staying on track?
The part about her explaining it "like it was no big deal" is what gets me, because that tiny switch from one big monthly hit to $75 every two weeks is doing way more work than people realize. If you get paid every other Friday like most folks, the due dates line up with your checks so the money is already there before you can talk yourself out of it. Plus $75 twice a month feels like nothing compared to staring down $300 at once, so you stop dreading it and just let it run. I'd take that even further and say once the balance hits zero you should keep the same $75 auto draft going into a savings account, because your brain is already used to that money being gone.
