Overheard a guy at the coffee shop bragging about using the same password for everything

I was grabbing a coffee this morning and this dude was loudly telling his friend his password was just his dog's name and the year he was born, like 'Buddy2005'. It made me cringe so hard thinking about how easy that would be to guess. What's the simplest password rule you actually follow that makes a real difference?

Honestly, that casual overconfidence is how most security gets broken.

Most breaches come from basic mistakes, not just overconfidence. You're right to point it out, @tarar38, but calling it the main cause seems like a stretch. People forget updates or click bad links way more often. Overconfidence might set the stage, but it's rarely the only thing that goes wrong. It's usually a mix of simple human error and maybe a bit of that casual attitude you mentioned.

Yeah, that's just asking for trouble. My one rule is to never use real words you'd find in a dictionary. Just smash your hand on the keyboard and then maybe add a number at the end, something like 'gh7skLp2'. It's not perfect but it's way better than a pet's name.

Wait, you actually type out random strings like that for every password? That's wild. I'd forget it in two seconds flat. @shane170 has a point about basic mistakes, but my brain just can't handle total keyboard mashing.
