Saw a post about "just add more DEF" and lost it a little
Some guy online said if your truck is derated, just top off the DEF tank and drive it like nothing is wrong. I spent 6 hours last Tuesday chasing a NOx sensor code on a Freightliner that a shop had already blamed on bad DEF. How do you explain to customers that a $40 fill-up is not a fix for a $900 sensor job?

To be fair, the guy telling people to just top off the tank is half right, because a lot of derates really do clear with good DEF and a reboot. The problem is people hear that and stop there, when the tank top-off is just the first step and you still gotta pull codes and see if it comes back. So yeah, a fill-up is not a fix, but writing it off as useless advice misses the part where low DEF is a legit cause on half the trucks I see.
