Three years ago I painted everything with the default hard round brush
I used to just use the default hard round brush in Procreate for everything. Skin, hair, backgrounds, all of it. Then about six months ago I started forcing myself to use textured brushes for at least the blocking in phase. My portraits actually look like they have skin now instead of plastic. Anyone else stuck on one brush for way too long?

Wait what kind of portraits are you doing though? Like are we talking stylized stuff or trying to push towards realism? Cause I fell into the hard round trap too but it was worse for me because I was also cranking the flow up to 100% and wondering why everything looked like glossy plastic. The moment I switched to like a rough charcoal brush for the initial face planes was when things actually started looking like they had bones underneath.
