Update: I finally figured out why my line art looked so flat next to everyone else's
I've been posting digital art for around 2 years and always wondered why my line art looked flat compared to other people's work in the same style. Then 3 weeks ago I was watching a speedpaint from an artist I follow on YouTube and noticed they never use pure black for their lines. I opened my own files and every single one had black lines on everything, characters, backgrounds, props, all of it. I switched to a dark brown or dark blue for my lines depending on the piece and suddenly my drawings looked way more alive. I ran the same test on 6 older pieces and the difference was obvious every time. Has anyone else made this switch, and do you pick your line color based on the background or just stick with one shade?
