Am I the only one who stopped chasing the cheapest hostel after 3 weeks in Lisbon?
I always booked the cheapest dorm I could find, so I ended up in a 12 bed room in Lisbon for 18 euros a night, and I got zero sleep for 3 weeks straight. I finally paid 32 euros for a 4 bed place near Alfama, and my work calls stopped sounding like I was half dead. Turns out saving 14 bucks a night cost me way more in bad focus. What's your cutoff price for a room before you just book the nicer one?
My cutoff is usually around 25 to 30 euros depending on the city, but it also depends on how many nights I'm staying. For one night I'll tough it out in a big dorm to save cash, but anything past two or three nights and I'm paying extra for a smaller room. Sleep is the one thing you can't really get back while traveling, and bad sleep ruins the whole trip plus anything you actually need to get done. The 12 bed rooms always look fine in the photos and then someone's zipping a bag at 5am and you're done. Your 14 euro savings turned into a work problem, which is way more expensive than the room ever was.
