The hostel owner in Chiang Mai who asked why I was in such a rush
Six years ago I stayed at a little place off Nimmanhaemin Road in Chiang Mai, and the owner, a guy named Somchai, noticed I was booking buses and flights every few days. He asked why I was in such a rush to see everything, and I did not have a good answer. He said most people who pass through his place stay 3 nights and leave tired, but the ones who stay 3 weeks end up knowing the neighborhood and the people in it. I brushed it off at the time, but now I book longer stays in fewer spots. Same 3 months, way less moving around. My monthly costs dropped too since I am not paying for constant transit and one night hotel stops. Curious if anyone else switched to the slow style and how it went for them.
