TIL that mixing paint by weight instead of volume saves me real money

I had a buddy over last week who used to manage a paint shop in Tulsa. He watched me eyeball a gallon of custom color and just shook his head. Said I was throwing away maybe 15 percent of every batch to overpouring and spillage. I thought he was full of it until I tried his method with a cheap kitchen scale. Took me two test batches to dial in the ratios, but now I mix exactly what I need for a job, no more guessing. That extra can of leftover tint I used to buy every project? Gone. Has anyone else switched to weighing their mixes, or am I late to the party on this one?

My buddy who flips houses out in Phoenix told me the same thing last year. He was goofing around with a gram scale in his garage one weekend because he was tired of wasting money on those little sample jars that never match. Said he accidentally left his mixing cup on the scale and just started dumping tint in until the numbers lined up with his recipe. Now he swears he hasn't bought a full gallon of anything in months, just the little tubes and a base. It sounds like a whole other kind of math but he made it seem stupid simple once you do it a couple times.
