Warning: I thought peel and stick tile was junk until my neighbor showed me his laundry room
I always told people peel and stick was a waste of $40 and real thinset was the only way, then my neighbor in Tucson showed me his laundry room floor he laid 3 years ago and it still looks new. He said he spent a Saturday prepping with a $5 tube of primer first and that was the whole trick I had been missing. Has anyone else had a cheap fix like that hold up way longer than you expected?

Your neighbor got lucky with his floor. That primer trick works on clean concrete sometimes but it is not the magic fix people make it out to be. I have seen peel and stick pop up at the edges within a year in bathrooms and laundry rooms where moisture gets under it. Three years in a dry Tucson laundry room is not the same as a basement or a kitchen with a dishwasher leaking. Prepping right helps but it does not change what the tile is made of. Cheap stuff can last if nothing goes wrong, and that is a big if.
