One bad framing day made me swear off particle board shelves forever
Last Saturday I was putting up shelving in a garage in Phoenix and the whole thing just fought me. The studs weren't square, the brackets didn't match the holes I drilled, and the particle board split right down the middle after I tightened the third screw. I stood there holding a broken 8 foot board at 11am thinking this was supposed to be a two hour job. Turns out the original builder used 16 inch spacing on one wall and 24 on the other, so my pre-measured cuts were all useless. I ended up ripping out the whole plan and using plywood with cross braces instead, which took another 4 hours but feels solid now. The homeowner asked if I could just paint over the splits, and I had to explain that's not how load bearing works. Has anyone else walked into a 'quick shelf install' that turned into a framing audit? I'm curious how you handle walls that lie to you from the start.
