Appreciation post: a $9 tube of caulk stopped my basement from smelling like a swamp
I always thought you needed a pro for water problems, but a guy at the hardware store in Akron told me something that stuck with me. He said most basement leaks he sees are just failed caulk and old grout, not cracked foundations, and I kid you not, he said it was "90 percent of the calls." I blew him off for a bit because my basement smelled like a wet dog every spring. Then I spent $9 on a tube of kitchen and bath silicone and a $4 scraper, pulled the old junk off the tub and shower seams, and the smell vanished in two days. Two days! I was ready to call a waterproofing company that quoted me $3,400 just to look at it. The old caulk was cracked and peeling, water was sneaking behind the wall, and that was the whole thing. So if you have a musty basement, check your seams before you panic. What is the cheapest fix you have ever done that made you feel dumb for waiting so long?
