I finally figured out my butt joints were showing because of my knife angle
Been hanging board for 9 years and always had callbacks on paint showing faint lines at butt joints. Last month a guy named Dale on a hotel job in Amarillo watched me coat a joint and said my 6 inch knife was riding too flat, so the mud was going on thin at the edges and thick in the middle. He had me hold the blade at more of a 30 degree angle and feather it out past 10 inches each side. Tried it on the next 22 sheets and you can't see a single seam under a flashlight now. Turns out I was pressing hard and scraping half the mud back off without knowing it. Any of you got a trick for keeping that angle consistent on the last pass over your second coat?
