Question about taping butt joints, a guy in Dallas said my knifing was the problem not my mud
I've been hanging and finishing board for about 6 years now, mostly small remodels around Fort Worth. Last month an older finisher watched me coat a butt joint and he said my problem was I was crowning the mud in the middle instead of leaving it flat. I was using a 10 inch knife and putting way too much pressure on the ends, which made a hump I could feel with my palm. He had me switch to a 12 inch for the second coat and pull it tight, and my sanding time on a 3 bedroom house dropped from about 9 hours to 6. I still don't love the way it feels when I'm doing it, but the wall looks way better under a light. Has anyone else had someone point out their knife angle like that, and did you keep the change or go back to your old way?
