Twenty minutes turned into three hours chasing a cold solder joint on an old receiver

A buddy of mine had this happen with a 70s Marantz stereo. He spent all Saturday afternoon chasing a crackling sound in the left channel thinking it was a bad cap or transistor. Turns out the ground wire on the headphone jack was barely touching the chassis, just enough to work most of the time but not when things warmed up. He was so mad he almost threw the thing out the window before he found it. Cold solder joints are the worst kind of ghost in the machine, always hiding in the last place you look.

Man I felt that one. Nothing worse than spending hours on something only to find it was a loose wire the whole time.
