Guy at a food truck in Memphis taught me the real reason elevator doors act weird in summer, and I've been checking one sensor ever since
So this was a couple summers back. I was doing a callback on a hydraulic unit downtown, doors opening slow as molasses, nothing obviously wrong. Grabbed lunch at a taco truck on the corner and the guy working it starts chatting me up because he used to do building maintenance.
Anyway he asks what kind of doors, I say the old swinging kind, and he goes "yeah you checked the door operator belt tension when it's hot out?" I had not. Went back up, sure enough the belt had stretched just enough from the heat in that little closet to drag on the whole cycle. Tightened it maybe a quarter turn and it ran smooth.
Now when a door acts up between May and September the first thing I do is put a hand on that belt and check the closet temp. Whole call takes me 20 minutes instead of an hour of chasing ghosts.
DAE have a season where a specific part just starts acting up on you? Curious if anyone else sees this with belts or if it's just the old stuff I work on.
