The day I stopped carrying a 40lb chain fall in my trunk
Tbh I used to keep a chain fall in my truck for every car hoist motor swap. My old boss swore by it. Then last spring I got a call in Philly for a busted MRL motor and the parking garage had no freight access. I humped that thing up three flights of stairs and my back hurt for a week. Now I just use a come-along and a couple of spare straps. Way lighter setup, fits in a duffel. Anyone else ditch the heavy gear as they got older?

Man, that story hits different. Used to be team heavy gear all the way, thought the chain fall was the only safe way to do a motor swap. Then I did a rooftop unit in the middle of summer, no crane access, and had to carry that thing up a ladder. Felt like my spine was gonna give out. Swapped to a manual come-along and some rated straps after that, and honestly the lighter setup works just as good for most jobs. Only time I miss the big one is when Im doing a really heavy gearbox, but thats rare enough that I can rent one. Getting older is just admitting your back is worth more than the convenience.
