That follow-up template everyone loves? Saw it fail at a networking lunch in Omaha.
I was at a small business lunch in Omaha last week and watched a woman hand out a printout of what she called her "perfect follow-up" template that she got from some online group. It opened with "Just circling back" and had a line about "synergy" that made the guy across from me visibly wince before he even got to the second paragraph. I think the popular advice to keep follow-ups short and punchy is mostly wrong, because her version dropped all the specific stuff from their chat, like the name of his kid's baseball team and his budget range. She sent it to all 12 people at the event, and I know for a fact at least 3 of them deleted it on sight. What template do you use when you actually want someone to remember the conversation instead of just checking a box?
