Pro tip: my old mentor watched me nail on a shoe last Tuesday and just shook his head
He said I was setting the nail too high and low, which I figured was just him being picky after 30 years at the forge. Tried it his way on the next hoof and the clench came out clean on the first pass instead of me fighting it twice. Any of you still run into that where the older guys can spot a bad angle from across the barn?
Watching that clench come out clean the first time is a good lesson but I gotta correct one thing, a shoe last and a hoof are two different things lol. A last is the fake foot you build and shape a shoe on at the bench, and a hoof is what's actually on the horse when you go to nail it on. So if you were nailing on a shoe last you were tacking the shoe while it was still on the form, which is a whole other deal. Not trying to be that guy but in a trade like this the words matter and mixing them up can confuse people learning. Anyway your real point stands, the old timers really can see the angle is off from clear across the barn.
