I used to think a good design was all about the sketch, but after my 'Fashion Illustration 101' class at the community college last fall, I realized the real magic happens when you start draping the muslin on the form first, which totally changed my process because now I can see the fabric fall and move in real space before I ever put pencil to paper.

Has anyone else made that switch from starting with a flat sketch to starting with 3D draping, and what was the biggest difference you noticed in your final pieces?

My first attempt at draping looked like I was trying to dress a ghost with a grudge (it was a mess). But you're totally right, seeing how the fabric actually hangs makes the flat sketch so much more believable later. The biggest change for me was that my designs stopped looking so stiff and started having a real sense of movement. It's a humbling way to start, but it definitely saves me from some pretty wild ideas that would never work off the page.

But @julias44, the wild ideas are the whole point sometimes.

Maybe @cora813 needs to see a ghost in a grudge dress to understand.
