A guy at the copy shop in Reno showed me his rate sheet and I was charging HALF what he did
So I was in Reno last month getting flyers printed for my first design gig, and the guy behind the counter saw my files and asked what I charge. I said $15 an hour, thinking I was being smart and cheap to win jobs. He pulled out his own rate sheet from when he did freelance layout work. $35 an hour, minimum 2 hours. And here's the part that threw me: he said he almost never lost a job at that price, even in a small market.
Everyone tells new freelancers to go low to get in the door. I bought that for 6 weeks. But this guy's been at it 11 years and he said the cheap clients are the ones who call him at 9pm and want 4 rounds of changes. His stat that stuck with me: he tracked it for a year and his low rate jobs took up almost 60 percent of his hours but brought in under a third of his money.
I'm not saying go straight to $35 tomorrow. But I raised mine to $20 and nobody blinked. Has anyone tracked their own hours per dollar to see if the cheap jobs are really worth it?
