The coffee shop gig interview that exposed my whole pitch
Met a potential buyer at a Starbucks in Denver last week because they refused a video call. I did my usual 10 minute pitch about turnaround times and portfolio highlights, and they just stared at me until I stopped. Then they asked what I actually charge for revisions, and I froze because my profile buries that in the FAQ. It hit me that my whole selling point is speed, but I never mention how many tweaks are included. Has anyone else had a face to face meeting wreck their standard pitch routine?
Getting pulled out of your script in person is brutal because there's no back button. Used to figure the pitch was the whole game, just talk fast and sound sharp and the numbers would sort themselves out later. Now I'd say the gaps in your own setup are the real problem, not the buyer being weird about meeting up. If your plain answers live in an FAQ nobody reads, a live question turns into a pop quiz you can fail. Write down what you charge for extras and practice saying it out loud before you ever sit down with someone again.
