I swore I would never use floral foam, then a wedding in Boise changed my mind
Three years ago I told a room full of florists at a Boise workshop that foam was cheating and I would never touch the stuff again. Last month a bride wanted 40 centerpieces that had to sit in a hot venue for 9 hours, and my chicken wire setups were drooping by hour two, so I grabbed a case of foam and every single piece held. What do you all use when the venue is hot and you cannot babysit the arrangements?
Foam is not cheating, it is a tool, and the snobbery around it has cost me more clients than any wilted hydrangea ever did. I watched a veteran florist in Nampa lose a 30 table gig last June because she refused foam and her roses were fried by the toast. A hot venue is not a test of your morals, it is a test of your mechanics, and foam wins that test almost every time. You can soak it, cut it to fit any vessel, and it holds water where chicken wire just lets it drain. The real problem was never the foam, it was the cheap green block people stuff in dry and then blame when everything dies. Do it right and there is no shame in it.
