It really bugs me that conglomerate rocks get ignored at every rock show I go to
I've been to three shows this year, and all the focus is on quartz and gems. Conglomerates tell such cool stories about past environments, but they're always in the corner. Why do people skip over them?

They aren't always skipped, are they?

Most people just want shiny things. That conglomerate tells a real story, but it's not flashy. I've seen collectors walk right by stuff like that for a colorful mineral. It takes a certain eye to appreciate the history in plain rocks.

At the Springfield Rock Fair, I found a conglomerate full of rounded quartzite chunks from an old coastline. In my experience, it was stuck on a bottom shelf while everyone ogled the amethyst geodes. I must have been the only person to even ask about it all day, which is a real shame. Those rocks show how landscapes change over millions of years, way more interesting than just a pretty crystal in my book.
