My first EIN application mistake still haunts me 3 years later

Back in 2021 I was setting up my pest control LLC and thought I could save money by doing the EIN application myself online. I typed my social security number wrong by one digit and didn't catch it until the IRS sent me a rejection letter 6 weeks later. Took me 3 phone calls and over 4 hours on hold to get it sorted out. The lady at the IRS office in Austin was actually helpful once I got through, but she said I was lucky because a mismatched EIN can trigger audits later. Has anyone else dealt with a rejected EIN application and how long did it take you to fix it?

My buddy actually did the exact same thing with his landscaping business. He flipped two numbers around on his SSN and didn't notice until the rejection letter showed up almost two months later. He was so mad at himself because he'd already printed business cards and ordered equipment under that EIN. Took him about 2 weeks of calling and waiting to get a human on the phone who could fix it. The IRS lady he finally talked to said the same thing about audits being a real risk with mismatched numbers. He still double checks every single form three times now before he sends anything in.

My coworker did that too. Took him a month to fix it.
