Honestly feel you on this, such a pain when your VPN keeps timing out.

The bigger issue no one's talking about is how these coffee shops have their own DNS settings that mess with your VPN's handshake. I had a spot in Seminyak where every 15 minutes my connection would just drop, turned out their router was running some weird transparent proxy for the government filters. Switched to using my phone as a tether with a travel router (game changer, seriously) and all those random timeouts stopped happening. The coffee shop wifi was actively fighting my VPN the whole time, not just being slow.

Honestly, I feel you so hard on this, @troyc17. Ngl, I had the exact same thing happen at a spot in Ubud where the wifi would just cut out every time I hit a secure site. Tbh, the transparent proxy thing is way more common than people think, especially out in Southeast Asia where the government has those filters running. It's such a pain because you think the wifi is just slow, but really it's actively killing your connection. Switching to a travel router with your own DNS is honestly the only way to fix it without losing your mind.
