My team's chat went silent, and it took me back to the office water cooler days.
Those quick office talks by the printer often sparked ideas or fixed little problems right away. Now, our remote chats are just project updates and links, with no room for banter or random thoughts. It's starting to feel lonely, and I've noticed more emails flying over stuff that a five-minute chat could clear up. We gotta find a way to keep that casual connection alive, even if it's just a silly meme channel or a quick video call with no agenda.

In Slack, we added a channel for off-topic banter.

That "off-topic banter" channel @west.susan mentioned can backfire if it's too random. A space for work-adjacent chat, like sharing a cool article, often works better.

Wait, backfire? How does that even happen? Ngl, our off-topic channel is chaotic but we love it.

You see this a lot in regular group chats too. When things get too random, folks just kinda stop talking. I mean, having a topic like work stuff gives people a safe way to join in. Idk, maybe it's just me, but a little focus makes it less weird. It's like how having a common interest keeps a conversation going.
