A guy at the Rio Rancho meetup told me to invoice from a business acct, and 3 months in it fixed a mess I didn't know I had
About 5 months ago I was at that freelancer coffee thing at a shop in Rio Rancho and I mentioned how I was tracking gigs in a notebook and just zelle-ing myself when I needed cash. A guy who does design work looked at me and said point blank, open a business checking account today, even if it costs you 15 bucks a month, because you don't want your rent and your client money living in the same pot. I nodded and did nothing for a few weeks because it felt like extra work. Then tax stuff came up and I had no idea which deposits were mine and which were job payments, and I spent a whole Saturday digging through my personal account. I finally went to a credit union here in town, opened the account, and started sending invoices from it. Three months later I can tell you exactly what I made in April, and I stopped guessing at what was actually profit. Anyone else in ABQ run into this, like did you open a business account early or did you wait until taxes forced you to?
