Had to explain AI bias to a coworker who thought ChatGPT was literally magic

Last week in the teachers lounge, a science teacher told me she uses AI to grade essays without even reading them herself. I had to sit her down and explain that the model has known biases and can penalize kids with nonstandard writing styles. Three years ago I took a short workshop on algorithmic fairness in Denver, and I still remember the example where an AI hiring tool downgraded women automatically. She looked at me like I had three heads when I said the AI was trained on human data. I pulled up a study from last month about grade disparities and she finally got it. Has anyone else had to talk a coworker down from trusting AI way too much?

Yeah that tracks with everything else getting outsourced to algorithms lately.

Honestly I used to think algorithms just made things faster and more convenient. But seeing how much gets lost when real human input is replaced by automation has completely changed my mind. It's like we traded actual connection for speed and lost something important along the way.
