Hot take: I was dead wrong about digital welding helmets

Back in 2010 I swore I'd never use a battery powered hood. Old timers at the Local 374 hall said it was just another thing to break. Then I borrowed a Jackson NexGen at a Union job in Peoria and my neck pain went away after a week. Has anyone else had a change of heart about something they hated for years?

Visited that new barber expo in Denver last weekend and noticed nobody was demoing straight razor work anymore

Every booth was clippers and trimmers with zero focus on traditional shaving, anyone else seeing this shift in the industry?

The before and after on an old 737 radio stack I worked up last month

I got a call to look at a radio stack from a 737 that was acting up during approach. The before picture was a mess, wiring was all tangled up and one connector was barely hanging on. After about 6 hours of tracing wires and cleaning contacts, I got it sorted. The after was night and day, the traffic collision system stopped throwing false alerts and the comms were crystal clear. The pilot told me it was the first time in months that approach didn't have to repeat themselves. Has anyone else run into a stack that looked fine but had broken ground pins hiding behind the panel?

Went to an open house last weekend and it totally changed how I view 'move-in ready'

I walked into a 3-bedroom ranch in a suburb of Columbus that was listed as 'updated and move-in ready'. The realtor was all smiles pointing out the fresh paint and new carpet. But then I checked the basement and saw a big crack in the foundation wall with old water stains running down it. The furnace was from 1989 too. Now I'm thinking I need to bring a contractor to every house I look at from now on. Has anyone else had a listing totally mislead them like that?

White labs vs wyeast for sour beers... finally picked a side

For years I just grabbed whatever liquid yeast pack was on the shelf for my sours, but after 3 batches of bland Flanders reds I decided to run a side by side test. White labs brett blend took off way faster and gave me that funky barnyard smell after just 4 weeks, while the wyeast took almost 2 months to show any character. Has anyone else noticed a big difference in how fast these blends work in a long ferment?

TIL letting a junior tech shadow me costs me 2 hours a day but saves 10 later

I used to just hand over a ticket and hope for the best, letting new guys learn by trial and error in the back. Last month I started sitting with my apprentice Mike for the first 30 minutes of every motherboard swap or drive recovery, explaining my process step by step. It feels like a huge time suck at first, but I swear I'm fixing fewer callbacks now - he caught a bad PSU on a Dell Optiplex 7050 before I even noticed the symptoms. Has anyone else found that slowing down upfront actually speeds up your whole week?

Read an old thread from 2018 about freelancers charging $50/hr and almost spit out my coffee

Saw someone in a 2018 forum post bragging they charged $50 an hour for copywriting, and now I can't even get out of bed for less than $90. Has anyone else had to basically double their rates just to keep up with rent?

My friend’s comment about my color palette made me rethink everything

I was showing my friend Sarah a finished piece last week and she said something like 'the colors feel safe, you know?' and it just hit me weird. She meant it as a compliment I think but I couldn't stop thinking about it. It made me realize I've been sticking to the same blue-purple-grey palette for like two years straight. I went back and looked at my last 20 pieces and she was totally right. So I spent this week forcing myself to use bright oranges and pinks in a landscape piece just to see what happens. It's not my best work but it's definitely not boring. Has anyone else had a friend point out something obvious about your art that you totally missed?

Debate: Replacing thermal paste every 6 months vs. never touch it unless temps are bad

I tried doing a full repaste on my personal rig every 6 months for about a year. First time dropped temps by 8c. Second time? Maybe 2c. Third time i saw zero change. Now im wondering if we are all just wasting tubes of paste chasing tiny gains. On the other hand, my buddy in Austin never repastes and his CPU has been running at 85c for 3 years with no issues. What side are you on? Do you stick to a schedule or just leave it alone?

I visited the old computer lab at my old high school last week

The teacher said they got a grant for it about 8 months ago, and the kids use it for digital media projects.
