A chat with an old timer about wheel building made me miss the old ways
I was at the shop yesterday and this guy, maybe 70, brought in a 1980s Raleigh with a wobbly rear wheel. He watched me true it on the stand and said, 'You know, we used to build those from scratch in a day, spokes and all, for about $15 labor.' That hit different because now a basic wheel build starts at $80 and feels like a lost art. He said the real skill was feeling the tension in your hands, not just reading a gauge. It got me thinking about how much of the craft has turned into just swapping parts. Has anyone else had a moment that made you feel like a mechanic from another time?
