Visited the old botanical garden in St. Louis the other day and the greenhouse felt different

I get the frustration, I really do. But honestly, I kind of liked it better without all the little name tags everywhere. When I went last month, I ended up just looking at the plants themselves instead of reading their life stories. The shape of a leaf or the way the light came through the big fronds became the whole point. It felt more like being in a real jungle instead of a museum exhibit, you know?

Just learned that fungus on lens elements can actually etch the glass if left long enough...

Yeah but I read somewhere that certain types of fungus can actually eat through the coating on a lens element, especially if it sits for years in a damp bag. I'd never seen it myself until I got an old lens from a friend, and the coating was literally peeling off in spots. @emma_lee22 maybe yours were caught early enough that the fungus didn't have time to do real damage. I think a lot of people don't realize how aggressive some of those spores can get once they've got a good food source like the organic coatings on glass. It's scary to think how fast it can spread too, especially if you store your gear in a warm closet.

PSA: Check your regulator gauge before every shift

You ever have one of those things where you finally decide to get something and it breaks right away? @torres.riley I had a similar thing happen with a pair of boots last year. Everyone told me they'd last forever, but I got a bad stitch on the first hike and the sole started coming off. Lucky for some, I guess.

TIL the hard way about kiln-dried lumber from a local mill

Brought home a whole stack of what I thought was kiln dried maple from a local guy last summer, let it sit in my shop for a month, started milling it for a desk and it twisted like a pretzel overnight. Turned out the core of the boards was still wet even though the surface read fine. Now I always split a scrap piece or test the end grain like that mill guy said. Your mistake is way more common than you think, a lot of small mills don't dry stuff all the way through.

Hostel bunk curtain hack that saved me $40 on my Tokyo trip last month

Nice hack! Its wild how a tiny fix can make or break a trip honestly.
